Illinois State University operates under authority granted by the Illinois General Assembly. Programs of study offered by the University have been specifically authorized by the State of Illinois through its Illinois Board of Higher Education. In addition to being state-authorized, Illinois State University and many of its programs are accredited. Accreditation is a voluntary process that provides assurances to the public, particularly to prospective students, that an institution or program meets clearly-stated requirements and criteria. Accreditation assures quality by verifying that an institution or program meets threshold quality standards and is engaged in continuous improvement.
Illinois State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), one of six regional accrediting agencies recognized by the United States Department of Education. Information about the status and terms of this accreditation is summarized in a Statement of Accreditation Status published by the commission. Further information is available by contacting HLC at (800) 621-7440, (312) 263-0456, or email@example.com.
HLC accreditation of colleges and universities involves multiple reviews occurring in a 10-year cycle. The cycle begins with a comprehensive review by a peer-review team, including a site visit by the team. For Illinois State University that comprehensive review last occurred in 2015. The University submitted its request for reaffirmation of accreditation, called an assurance argument, to HLC on March 23, 2015. The peer-review team visited the University on April 20-21, 2015. The team subsequently submitted a report of its findings and recommendations to the HLC Institutional Actions Council. The council voted to continue HLC accreditation of Illinois State effective July 27, 2015. No interim reports or follow-up actions were required in connection with the decision. Remaining accreditation reviews of Illinois State University during the current 10-year cycle are listed below. The schedule is subject to refinement or change by HLC.
