Tenure & Promotion (ASPT)

About ASPT

The (Faculty) Appointment, Salary, Promotion, and Tenure (or ASPT) system at Illinois State University prescribes policies and procedures related to probationary and tenured faculty. The system sets forth levels of achievement necessary for sustained progress in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. The system is intended to appoint, reward, and retain a highly competent faculty through a democratic system that involves faculty in the evaluation of professional competence. Policies are set forth in the Faculty Appointment, Salary, Promotion, and Tenure Policies document approved by the Faculty Caucus of the Academic Senate. The document is reviewed and revised at least every five years. Review is underway at this time, with a new edition scheduled to take effect January 1, 2017. For more information regarding this review, see the Documents section of the Academic Senate website.

ASPT Committees

The ASPT system at Illinois State University is administered by a tiered system of committees elected by tenure-line faculty members. On the university-level, the University Review Committee recommends university-wide ASPT policies to the Faculty Caucus (see University Policies above), reviews and approves college-level ASPT policies, considers department/school ASPT policies upon request, and renders interpretations of university-wide ASPT policies. Also on the university-level, the Faculty Review Committee considers appeals of promotion and tenure decisions. Development and administration of college-level ASPT policies is the responsibility of the College Faculty Status Committee (CFSC) in each college. Development and administration of academic unit-level ASPT policies is the responsibility of the Department Faculty Status Committee (DFSC) or School Faculty Status Committee (SFSC) in each unit. Use the link at left to view current college and department/school ASPT standards.
