The first public university in Illinois, Illinois State University was founded in 1857. Illinois State is a comprehensive Carnegie Doctoral/Research Institution and residential university offering more than 189 undergraduate fields of study in 6 colleges and 34 academic departments. The Graduate School coordinates 42 master’s, 1 specialist, and 9 doctoral programs. The University has an enrollment of about 21,000 students and a full-time faculty of over 1,100.

College of Education Dean Search

Illinois State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Education. The Dean is the chief academic and executive officer of the College of Education providing vision and leadership in teaching, research, and service in the context of shared governance. The Dean leads the development and implementation of the College’s strategic future. The Dean reports to the Provost who also serves as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The College

The College of Education provides leadership in teacher and administrator education through delivery of programs in several departments and units, including Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, Educational Administration and Foundations, Thomas Metcalf School, and University High School; coordination of the Council for Teacher Education; and dissemination of research that informs policy and practice.

This College is a comprehensive and complex organization that prepares educators and administrators for the full range of education professions. Students select from early-childhood through administrative majors, bachelors through doctorate degrees. The College also provides a wide range of professional development for education professionals. Graduates are teachers, principals, superintendents, college and university presidents, student affairs personnel, professors, researchers, and policy makers.

The University is ranked as one of the top ten largest teacher preparation institutions in the nation among American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education institutions. Nearly one in eight Illinois public school teachers is an alumnus of Illinois State. The College of Education is organized into the departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, Educational Administration and Foundations, Thomas Metcalf School, University High School, and the Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center. The College enrolls more than 3,000 students who choose from a wide array of teacher and administrator preparation programs, including elementary education, early childhood education, middle level education, reading, and all areas of administrator/leadership and special education. Graduate programs are offered in Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, K-12 Administration, and Higher Education Administration.

The College of Education is one of only 85 in the nation that maintains laboratory schools. Thomas Metcalf and University High schools provide a unique educational option from pre-kindergarten through the senior year for approximately 1,000 students in the community. The schools also serve as sites for clinical experiences that are critically important to the College’s future teachers.

Position Description

Key Responsibilities

The Dean has overall responsibilities for developing an effective collegial environment that supports excellence in teaching, research and service advancing the field of education; to facilitate collaboration between faculty members and among programs within the College and University, and to coordinate the College’s efforts with schools, corporations, other universities and communities, and state, federal, and international agencies. The Dean must be committed to the urban teacher preparation focus; to continued excellence in undergraduate and graduate education; to support for faculty scholarship and research activities, including extramural funding; and to partnerships with local schools. The Dean will engage College faculty, staff and students in developing a shared plan for the future of the College and its role in the broader mission of the University.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position include a fundamental understanding of the scholarly, teaching, and service responsibilities of a College of Education faculty member at a major university, and a working knowledge of the pedagogical, economic, and political relationships among academic units within the College.

The successful candidate must have a record of successful administrative leadership in a college of education, be accomplished as a scholar and teacher, and be eligible for a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor within one of the College’s departments. The successful candidate should have experience in providing leadership in legislative or other state or federal policy actions pertaining to university and college missions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate energy, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to communicate effectively. The successful candidate should have skills in securing and allocating resources to provide quality undergraduate and graduate instruction, research, public engagement and outreach activities; success in securing and managing extramural funding; experience in strategic planning; experience in teacher education accreditation; the ability to work with other deans and administrators in developing goals and programs; and demonstrated expertise in addressing the needs of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
